Launch of “Safer motorcycling – the global motorcycle industry approach to road safety”

Industry contribution to the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety

International Motorcycle Manufacturing Association (IMMA) Launches Updated Publication “Safer Motorcycling: The Global Motorcycle Industry’s Approach to Road Safety”.

IMMA recommends this document to institutions, safety managers and policy makers as a valuable resource for developing holistic Powered Two-Wheeler (PTW) safety and transport policies at global, regional, and national level.

This is the IMMA contribution to the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety.

PTWs MUST BE POSITIVELY INCLUDED IN PUBLIC POLICY – INDUSTRY FOUR-STAGE STRATEGY

IMMA proposes that policymakers use a Four-Stage Strategy which promotes road safety by: focusing on the positive inclusion of PTWs in national, regional, and international transport policy; encouraging rider-friendly infrastructure policy; supporting lifelong training and education; and investing in safety related technological developments.

IMMA calls upon governments across the globe to take a strategic approach to PTW safety, actively involving all relevant stakeholders and using accurate, standardised data to inform and support any policy decisions. The approach should take into account the specifics of PTW characteristics and their specific use. Industry is keen to play a part in an integrated approach alongside other stakeholders.

SUSTAINABLE AND SAFE MOTORCYCLING FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE SOCIETY

The number of PTWs is increasing globally. This document explores several ways to ensure that this growth is accompanied by safety and sustainability. Sustainable motorcycling allows society to fully benefit from the PTWs contribution to mobility of people and goods, improved access to fundamental services both in urban and rural areas, enhanced social welfare and economic growth.

COMPENDIUM OF INDUSTRY-LED BEST PRACTICES IN SAFETY AND TRANSPORT POLICY

Countries are encouraged to study the best practices established in this document and evaluate their adoption and implementation while considering the specific needs of their region.
