WP.29 is the United Nations body that develops and maintains the international regulatory framework for motor vehicles under the 1958, 1997, and 1998 Agreement, bringing together government delegations and industry stakeholders from around the world.
IMMA took part in the 199th session of the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (UNECE WP.29), held in Geneva from 22 to 26 June 2026.
IMMA participates in the World Forum to convey the perspective of L-category vehicles manufacturers across the wide range of regulatory topics on the agenda.
The defining outcome of the June session was the adoption of the first-ever global regulatory framework for Automated Driving Systems (ADS). WP.29 adopted in parallel a new UN Regulation under the 1958 Agreement and a new UN Global Technical Regulation under the 1998 Agreement, setting harmonized requirements for fully driverless vehicles equipped with automated driving systems.
These two regulations are the result of many years of collaborative work carried out under the Working Party on Automated/Autonomous and Connected Vehicles (GRVA) with the active involvement of experts from all around the world.
Alongside the new framework, WP.29 also adopted a package of amendments to some 90 existing UN Regulations, ensuring they remain applicable to vehicles equipped with automated driving systems, including those designed without traditional driver controls.
IMMA followed the proceedings closely, recognizing the significance of this milestone for the global vehicle regulatory landscape and for road safety worldwide.
IMMA looks forward to continuing its constructive engagement in WP.29 and its subsidiary bodies on the regulatory priorities of the global motorcycle industry.
