The high level conference purpose was to share knowledge and spur action on what works to prevent traffic tragedies and improve road safety. During the many sessions addressing different road safety aspects, experts shared their country challenges and communicated suggestions for solutions and successful policies regarding road safety. The global meeting also reviewed the progress in the “Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020” aiming to save 5 million lives and looked beyond 2020, adopting the “Brasilia Declaration on Road Safety”.
IMMA at the Conference
During a dedicated side event on Motorcycle Safety organized by the Bank of Development in Latin America (CAF) and by the International Transport Forum (ITF), representatives of IMMA and ABRACICLO (the Brazilian Association of Manufacturers of Motorcycles, Mopeds, Scooters, Bicycles and Similar Products) jointly introduced IMMA’s global White Paper “ The Shared Road to Safety – A Global Approach for Safer Motorcycling” and distributed 400 copies.
The representatives of IMMA emphasized the importance of integrating Motorcycles in the country transportation strategies, policies and infrastructure, training and educating drivers as human factors are the most prevalent part of the contributing factors to crashes. Moreover, they highlighted the need to address counterfeit and illegal products and parts which have a negative impact on vehicle safety.
Outcome of the Conference
The adoption of the Brasilia Declaration on Road Safety which highlights actions needed for each of the five pillars of the UNECE Global Plan:
a) Road safety management, legislation and enforcement
b) Safer roads and mobility
c) Safer road
d) Users safer vehicles
e) Improved post-crash response.
Governments also agreed to intensify both national action and international cooperation to meet the 2020 target. Lastly, the conference called for governments to rethink transport policies as to favor more sustainable modes of transport such as walking, cycling and using public transport. With the attention given to motorcycling, the importance as a key mobility instrument was broadly recognized.
